Nelson de Araújo a behind the scenes glimpse into his journey

As a designer with a degree in Product Design, I have always been drawn to creating functional and aesthetically pleasing pieces. My journey as a designer began when I moved to Sicily for an Erasmus program in 2015. It was during this time that I developed a passion for the furniture industry. In 2017, I took the leap and founded my own creative studio, Nelson de Arajo Design, which focuses on Furniture Design and 3D Visualization. Since then, I have been able to fully immerse myself in my craft and bring my unique vision to life through my designs.

How did you get your start as a designer, and what drew you to creating functional design pieces?

Growing up in the Punk Rock culture, I was constantly exposed to free expression and the questioning of societal norms. This upbringing fostered in me a strong sense of curiosity and critical thinking, which has remained a driving force in my career as a designer. To me, design is not just about creating aesthetically pleasing objects, but also about finding solutions to problems and asking important questions. It was this passion for problem-solving and the desire to create functional, yet beautiful designs that led me to pursue a career in design.

What does your design process entail?

As a designer, I am constantly seeking out new ways to improve my skills and stay current in the industry. My design process begins with observing and gathering inspiration from my surroundings and engaging in thorough research on design trends, production techniques, and other designers.

Once I have a clear vision for a new furniture piece, I create a moodboard to outline the key characteristics and begin sketching out the design on paper until I achieve the desired shape. From there, I bring the design to life through 3D modeling and carefully select materials and colors that will enhance both the comfort and aesthetics of the piece. Throughout this process, I also ensure that the final product is feasible for production.

Could you tell us more about the creative process behind your works?

Design is a personal expression of my life, emotions, and thoughts. Each piece I create is a reflection of my own unique perspective and worldview. In my creative process, I strive to make each design special and one-of-a-kind by incorporating natural elements and experimenting with different combinations to achieve a welcoming and memorable aesthetic. My ultimate goal with every design is to evoke positive emotions and create a sense of harmony for those who interact with it.

What impact did your cultural background have on your work?

Growing up in the beautiful setting of Viana do Castelo, Portugal, surrounded by both mountains and sea, I developed a deep appreciation for nature and the outdoors. I often found myself drawn to spending time in nature, as it consistently sparked my creativity and provided endless inspiration for my designs. The natural world has therefore played a significant role in shaping my aesthetic and influencing the overall direction of my work.

3 Words that describe your work

Minimalist, organic, and bold.

Who are some of the most important influences in your work?

Dieter Rams is a major influence in my work as a designer, and his principle of "Less but Better" has greatly impacted my perspective on design. I strive to create designs that are simple and balanced, with a strong focus on aesthetics, functionality, and feasibility for production. I believe that this approach allows for the creation of truly exceptional and timeless pieces.

What is the most important tool when creating your work?

Creativity is a vital aspect of my work as a designer and is ultimately what allows me to bring my unique ideas to life. Without it, I would not be able to produce the innovative and original designs that I am known for. It is my creativity, along with my passion for design, that have allowed me to develop my skills and become the designer I am today.
